Black, White, Red & Yellow Art Exhibition
Launched on 8 August, this exhibition comprises a colourful exploration of the life and times of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. It is told through vibrant paintings and sketches by pop artist Richard Scott, based on iconic photographs by Benny Gool. The exhibition is on for two months, with a parallel exhibition at The Granary in Buitenkant St, home of the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation.

Ikhono LaseNatali
Initiated by visual activist and photographer, Zanele Muholi, Ikhono LaseNatali celebrates emerging artists from KwaZulu-Natal, Muholi’s home province. The exhibition sees 25 young, talented artists using a medium of their choice to interpret Muholi’s Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Dark Lioness) series. In Somnyama Ngonyama, Muholi confronts the politics of race and offers a radical statement of identity and resistance. The exhibition also includes a wide-reaching exchange with Western Cape schools and aims to challenge youth to consider the tenets of inclusivity, creativity and collectivism.

Athol Fugard’s Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act
Following an acclaimed premiere at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees, a new production of Athol Fugard’s powerful classic, Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act comes to The Fugard Studio Theatre from 17 September for a limited season. Written in 1972, the play is set in apartheid South Africa, where relationships across the colour bar were a criminal offence.

Under Cover of Darkness
The exhibition Under Cover of Darkness aims to highlight the experience of colonial subjects through a specific focus on the lives of Susanna of Bengal (a slave who worked in the Company’s Garden), Krotoa (a woman whose understanding of both Khoikhoi and Dutch culture saw her occupy a complex social and political position under colonial rule) and many unnamed slave women held at the Slave Lodge. The exhibition further seeks to question how these stories continue to bear on the present.

Filling in the Gaps
This exhibition highlights Iziko South African National Gallery’s commitment to rewriting art history and building a resource of national pride. It features important historical acquisitions of artworks by Peter Clarke, Ephraim Ngatane, Moses Tladi and John Koenakeefe Mohl, which all assist in building a national collection that is more representative of the overlooked and marginalised artists of the past. It also showcases works by contemporary, cutting-edge artists like Lerato Shadi, Sethembile Msezane, Mongezi Ncaphayi and Steven Cohen.

The Imam and Us
This year marks 50 years since Imam Abdullah Haron, a South African Muslim cleric and anti-apartheid activist died in apartheid detention. Don’t miss The Imam and Us, a show aimed at celebrating his life. According to a statement by westerncape.gov.za, during his life, Imam Haron regularly spoke out against the evils of apartheid during his Friday sermons at the Al-Jaamia Mosque in Stegman Rd, Claremont, and encouraged Muslims to support others oppressed by the apartheid regime.

SATORI
Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) presents its Spring Season with SATORI, a new trilogy of exciting works that combine classical and neo-classical ballet. Two of the works, Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco and Michelle Reid’s Sheeple will be newly staged alongside an original commissioned work for CTCB by celebrated UK choreographer Kenneth Tindall. Sheeple is renowned South African choreographer Reid’s new full work. Tindall is an independent choreographer as well as the artistic director and resident choreographer of Northern Ballet.

Origins of Early Sapiens Behaviour
The Origins of Early Sapiens Behaviour exhibition is a showcase of a culmination of some 30 years of archaeological research in the southern Cape, undertaken by Professor Christopher Henshilwood, Dr Karen van Niekerk, Professor Sarah Wurz and their research teams at Blombos Cave, Klipdrift Shelter and Klasies River. The exhibition is designed to explore key aspects of archaeological research and is linked to the SapienCE/Wits research programme that focuses on early human origins and innovations in southern Africa.
