Wise-Up Wednesday Sessions
Join WorkInProgress (WIP), an Absa innovation lab, every Wednesday as they host a webinar series, featuring the real-life successes and lockdown challenges of South African small and medium enterprises. Supporting the livelihoods of women in Supplier Development programmes
Absa, which is supporting this webinar, says Covid-19 “has deeply impacted women, who have borne the brunt of disproportionate care burdens, disruptions in income and education, and poor access to health and other essential services”. Kwaai by Eclectica Contemporary
Eclectica Contemporary is showing the third edition of its annual exhibition, Kwaai. The gallery says the exhibition aims to “provide a platform on which coloured and POC artists (people of colour) and those who identify as such can exhibit together in a considered space”.
Tata Madiba: Father of our democracy by Iziko Museums of South Africa
This Mandela Month check out Iziko’s updated exhibition honouring, Nelson Mandela. The exhibition has “objects, specimens, and artworks to stimulate conversation about Madiba’s life, struggles and legacy”. View the exhibition here.
The Adventures of Mbali by Iziko Museums of South Africa
Did you know that 22 April marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day? To commemorate the milestone aimed at supporting environmental protection, Iziko launched a comic book strip featuring Mbali, a young explorer on a mission to fight climate change. If you have children, consider showing them The Adventures of Mbali so they can learn about climate change in a fun way.
Stillness by Worldart
Check out Renée Rossouw’s virtual exhibition, Stillness at Worldart. With this body of work, Rossouw “uses linocuts and shapes cut from paper to create compositions that re-imagine order and the way we live”.
Cirque My Ride by Zip Zap Circus
Zip Zap Circus has been screening its past productions and will be showing Cirque My Ride on 8 August from 16h00 until 22h00 on 9 August. “While being taken on a journey of marvellous wizardry and hilarious mischief, the audience will be kept on their toes, their eyes wide open and their hearts racing. This show also features an incredible aerial act, performed by internationally acclaimed circus trio, Wisefools,” says Zip Zap Circus. Tickets costs R50.
The Fugard at Home
Iconic inner-city theatre The Fugard has a new digital platform, The Fugard at Home, that allows you to stream some of the theatre’s past productions and works streaming both locally and globally. Be sure to check out Falls the Shadow: The Life and Times of Athol Fugard which looks at the life and work of one of South Africa’s most prolific playwrights.
Sing like a pro by Cape Town Opera
The Cape Town Opera (CTO) has put together a series of 12 instructional videos for aspiring singers. This is part of their annual country-wide tour (cut short by Covid-19) to provide music workshops for thousands of learners competing in South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod. The videos on the CTO’s YouTube channel show proper vocal technique, highlight specific challenges to each piece and voice type and much more. Check out the modules here.
