The City of Cape Town has confirmed the following events to take place in the Cape Town CBD from now until 15 December to align with the national programme of events as announced by the Presidency. For more information on any of these please visit www.capetown.gov.za/nelsonmandela.
Throughout the mourning period: members of the public may leave flowers and write messages in books of remembrance, available at the Civic Centre and on the Grand Parade. In addition, all those who wish to leave online dedications are encouraged to do so at www.capetown.gov.za/nelsonmandela.
Tuesday 10 December 2013 – screening on the Grand Parade of the national memorial service at FNB Stadium: the City will screen the national memorial service that is being held at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, live at the Grand Parade, from 11h00 onwards. Following the screening, choirs and poets will pay homage to Madiba and there will be performances by Jimmy Dludlu, Sarah Theron and Fancy Galada.
Wednesday 11 December 2013 – memorial service at Cape Town Stadium: the City will host a memorial service entitled “Nelson Mandela – A Life Celebrated” at Cape Town Stadium from 16h00 (gates to open at 14h00.) Entry is free of charge but, please note, a coupon system has been introduced for the safety of attendees. A maximum of five coupons are available per person, on presentation of a valid driver’s licence, ID or passport. These coupons can be collected prior to the event at Computicket stands and Shoprite/Checkers outlets across Cape Town on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not delay – coupons are going fast! There will be free access to public transport into and out of the city from noon onwards on the MyCiTi and Golden Arrow bus services, and Metrorail. There will also be a free MyCiTi shuttle service from the Civic Centre to Cape Town Stadium, and the Fan Walk will also be activated. Prominent artists are being lined up to perform and the event will conclude at 23h00.
Saturday 14 December 2013 – night vigil at the Grand Parade: on the eve of Madiba’s funeral, Capetonians will be able to gather for a night vigil on the Grand Parade from 17h00
Sunday 15 December 2013 – screening of national funeral at the Grand Parade: the national funeral service being held in Qunu, in the Eastern Cape, will be screened live at the Grand Parade.
