The Homestead, a CCID partner NGO that provides shelter to male street children, is recovering from a devastating fire, and CCID Social Development is appealing for your help.
Last month, a blaze broke out in a cottage at The Homestead’s Khayelitsha facility. Thankfully, no harm came to any of the children or staff, but parts of the cottage need rebuilding, including the bathroom, kitchen, lounge area and a portion of the roof. Additionally, the four dormitories in the cottage suffered smoke, water and fire damage.
While insurance will cover most of the rebuilding costs, The Homestead needs the following donations to minimise disruption to the children in its care and replace what has been lost.
- New lounge furniture to provide a reading corner and quite area (R68 000);
- Side tables for next to the children’s beds (R53 000);
- 22 mattresses with fireproof covers (R42 000);
- New underwear and socks for the children (R4 700);
- Toiletries, toothbrushes and deodorant (R2 350);
- Good-quality second-hand clothes and shoes for boys aged nine to 17;
- A new foosball table for recreation (R7 500);
- Old laptops and cellphones for its credit incentive scheme (the children earn points for doing chores, attending school etc).
It could also do with assistance in terms of:
- Donations to cover the insurance excess and shortfall;
- Help to convert the burnt-down cottage kitchen into a second bathroom;
- Installing sustainable water and electricity solutions to reduce operational costs;
- Updating its fire early-warning systems (R10 000 – R15 000);
- Converting all its windows from glass to polycarbonate for safety and long-term savings (R26 000);
- Redecorating of the dormitories to make them comfortable and homely.
