There are suburban mall cinemas, and then there are Central City cinemas where every screening is a special occasion. Here’s where you can watch a movie downtown.
The Galileo Open Air Cinema
Capetonians have fallen in love with the Galileo Open Air Cinema, which promises a “memorable movie experience under the stars”. The CBD has two fantastic rotating venues: the Castle of Good Hope and Fedisa fashion school’s rooftop garden. This week, the latter is screening Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The Pink Flamingo Rooftop Cinema
A permanent open-air cinema exists at the Grand Daddy hotel in Long Street. The Pink Flamingo Rooftop Cinema shares space with seven vintage Airstream trailers, and is the perfect place to snuggle with a loved one. Check out Notting Hill on the 20th and Pretty Woman on the 27th.

The Fugard Theatre Bioscope
Across town is The Fugard Theatre’s beautiful bioscope. Throughout the year, The Fugard will be screening recorded performances of productions by the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Salzburg Festival Opera and the Globe Theatre. There’s nothing quite like watching a world-class production in a world-class venue.
