Cape Town has a rich culinary history that takes influence from African cookery as well as food brought by settlers and slaves. The latter includes produce and dishes introduced from Europe, India and Southeast Asia. Here are some well-known eats to try in the CBD.
There are lots of street vendors that sell boerewors rolls. Many, including Grab a Dog on the corner of Long Street and Hans Strijdom Avenue, are halaal.
Fixed kiosks such as Nur's Fast Food in Anton Anreith Place are common on the CBD's pedestrianised streets. You'll find many more in St Georges Mall and Waterkant Street.
Samoosas, mini pies and chilli bites (dhaltjies) are a Cape Town snack staple. Mariam's Kitchen on Pier Place is famous for all these, as well as the gatsby, a foot-long sandwich packed with hot chips and steak, chicken, polony or viennas.

Shaun Molale's Le Cho Me, at the Adderley Street end of Waterkant Street, opened earlier this year. It sells traditional food such as vetkoek, curry, stews and samp, and also does a braai on Saturdays.

Bakoven, run by Cecilia Conradie, is your one-stop shop for rotis, tomato bredie and koeksisters – the syrupy plaited ones or the aniseed-laced doughnuts covered with desiccated coconut. The latter are sometimes called koesisters. Everything is made on site by the same staff who have been there for 20 years.

Fresh fruit is also easily available for sale on the CBD's streets. Waleed Solomons works on his father's stall, which has been in business for 28 years, on the corner of Long Street and Hans Strijdom Avenue.
