Speaker’s Corner, a well-known heritage building bordering on Parliament Street and overlooking Church Square in the East City of the Cape Town CBD, is being revitalised after standing empty for close on two decades.
Development company Urban Lime outlined its vision for the building on site on 14 February at an event and tour of the building co-hosted by Future Cape Town.
Rashiq Fataar, founder and director of Future Cape Town (seen in the photo above addressing the audience), reported how his company had been commissioned by the developers to complete research on Church Square that would feed into the determined usage of the building. Says Fataar: "The report evaluates the square across multiple criteria, for example, equity, access, diversity and the like and includes recommendations to improve the public space going forward,"
The four-storey Speakers-Corner development, being marketed Swindon Property, will house niche office space and a variety of food and beverage outlets catering across a wide spectrum of consumer tastes and pockets to service both the daytime office communities in the area as well as the growing residential population around the periphery of Church Square. A roof terrace bar is also part of the project.
