The City of Cape Town’s flagship Summer Market will once again be held inside The Company’s Garden in the heart of the Central City from 20 to 30 December 2014 (excluding 25 December 2014).
The Summer Market will be open daily from 16h00 until 23h00 in The Company’s Garden and will offer an array of goods, culinary delights and entertainment.
Says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Economic Development, Councillor Garreth Bloor: “This market is about celebrating our rich heritage and the cultural diversity that makes Cape Town unique and strong. It forms part of this administration’s efforts to create spaces in our city in which communities from around Cape Town as well as our many international and South African visitors can experience our wealth of creativity in the city. Last year, the market boasted approximately 200 000 visitors from all walks of life – more than double the number of visitors in the previous year.
“It gives entrepreneurs a platform to showcase their wares to a wide range of potential customers, in keeping with our broader role of being an opportunity city by supporting entrepreneurship and enabling job creation.”
Marketgoers can expect approximately 200 vendors this year selling a wide range of products, including home decor, clothing and accessories, Christmas goods, arts and crafts, food and beverages, fresh produce, and health and beauty items. Preference has again been given to locally produced goods.
The entertainment on offer includes karaoke, stand-up comedy and up-and-coming performing artists.
“The total economic impact of last year’s market has been estimated to be between R29.2 million and R42.5m. Given the amount of approximately R2m that was spent on the event, the economic impact is considerable at a minimum of 15 times the initial investment amount,” says Bloor.
