U-turn Homeless Ministries is a faith-based organisation started 19 years ago to assist street people. As part of its Life Change programme, it operates charity stores, where it sells second-hand clothing donated by the public as well as retailers.
The NGO’s latest store opened in Riebeek Street in the CBD October. This outlet, U-turn’s fifth in Cape Town, has a wonderful selection of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, and accessories, all in great condition, for sale at great prices (many items have never even been worn before). All proceeds go towards uplifting participants in the Life Change programme.
U-turn Charity Shop is in the 9 Long St building, but fronts Riebeek Street. You can find it between Long and Burg streets.
At the launch, U-turn's director, Sam Vos, referred to the programme as “real retail therapy”. He thanked Simon Riley of Emira Property Fund for making the store viable by giving U-turn a discount on its rent.
Chrissy Lombardt will be working in the CBD store for its first two to three months. She got a hand up first via Straatwerk and, thanks to U-turn’s rehabilitation programme, now works for U-turn as a training manager.
