In celebrating Women’s Month, the CCID spoke to female leaders in government, business and civic society in the Central City. We published some of their comments in the Winter 2016 issue of City Views. Here is a Q&A with Yolanda Faro, acting chief of Metro Police, City of Cape Town. Stay tuned throughout August to meet more wonder women of the Cape Town CBD.
How long have you been doing the kind of work you do and why do you do it?
It’s been my passion to serve and protect for 18 years.
What is the most challenging part of what you do?
When a member has paid the ultimate price – killed in the line of duty.
What would you want the public to really understand about what it is you do?
The Metro Police’s mandate is traffic enforcement, bylaw enforcement and crime prevention. Through our Social Crime Prevention Unit, we concentrate on domestic violence, substance abuse, youth at risk and child safety.
We also, via the Cape Town Metropolitan Police Department (CTMPD) Training Academy, have youth academy camps in partnership with the Western Cape Government Education Department. This academy is a stepping stone to becoming a CTMPD Youth Cadet.
What would you like to see more of in the CBD?
More people from all walks of life flocking to the Grand Parade, The Company’s Garden and the museums.
What is your favourite spot in the CBD?
The Company’s Garden and the Iziko South African Museum.
What has been your best time in the CBD?
The Cape Town International Jazz Festival free concert on Greenmarket Square, the annual switching on of the festive lights, and during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ when the entire city visited the Grand Parade and Fan Walk.
If you had a lunch hour free to yourself, how would you spend it in the CBD?
I would walk from my office to St Georges Mall and then have a quick bite in Long Street.
