Is your MyCiTi myconnect card expiring in May?

by CCID

Transport for Cape Town (TCT), the City’s transport authority, wants to urge commuters whose myconnect cards expire in the month of May 2015 to replace the card by 31 May 2015 as the myconnect card will be declined by the MyCiTi service after the expiry date.

Commuters should take note that they can get a new myconnect card free of charge if they replace their expiring cards by 31 May 2015. Although the myconnect card expires, the card balance (the Mover points and money) does not expire and will be transferred to the new myconnect card immediately, provided that commuters arrange for a new card before the end of May 2015.

Approximately 10 000 myconnect cards expire by the end of this month. Commuters should look at the date on the front of the card – shown as “Valid thru 05/15” – to determine whether the card should be replaced.

Says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron: “The City urges MyCiTi users to please take the necessary steps to check their cards and, if they expire this month, to collect the new myconnect card and to transfer their Mover points and money well in advance to avoid long queues and the inconvenience of not being able to travel on the MyCiTi service as from 1 June 2015.

“The City is aware that it may be an inconvenience for commuters to replace their expired cards. It is, however, beyond our control as the myconnect card is a bank card and all bank cards have expiry dates. We are trying our best to make it as easy as possible for commuters to get a new card and this is why the City is carrying the cost of the new cards, for now.”

Those commuters with more than one myconnect card should check all of their cards.

Importantly, if a commuter neglects to replace an expired card by the deadline, a new card will have to be purchased for R35 and the commuter will have to wait 30 days for any balance on the card to be transferred to the new card.

Cards expiring at later dates will not be replaced now.

If your card has an expiry date of 05/15:

  • Check your card balance and penalties at a station kiosk or by tapping your card at the nearby information terminals.
  • Clear any outstanding penalties at a station kiosk.
  • Visit one of the card replacement kiosks at the Civic Centre and Table View stations. These kiosks are open from 05h00 to 19h00 every day of the week and will only handle card replacements.
  • Take your card, ID book, passport or driver’s licence with you. For a child without an ID book or passport, please take a birth certificate.
  • Complete a free card application form – these can be collected from the kiosk, or downloaded from the website www.myciti.org.za.
  • Your new myconnect card will, for now, be issued free of charge and the Standard or Mover point balance on your old card will be transferred to your new card.
  • This process of issuing a new card, transferring balances and capturing the commuter’s details will take about 15 minutes and commuters are therefore advised to save time by completing the application form before visiting the card replacement kiosk if possible.
